Following an evaluative study undertaken within the North West, we highlighted that discharge from hospital and crisis services to placements with extensive support, or to expensive out-of-area beds, was often unnecessary and, in the longer term, ineffective. Following our recommendations for ‘next steps to change’, many service users were supported with access to more suitable independent living and social re-integration and, in the process, significant improvements have been achieved in improved capacity and flow in local acute and secure units, and an associated reduction in delayed discharges.
