Project Description

It is a well-researched phenomenon that physical and mental health are inextricably linked, and that physical illness can increase the risk of mental illness (JCMHP, 2012) such as the associations between schizophrenia and a three-fold increased death rate from respiratory disease (Saha et al, 2007) and the reduced life expectancy of around 10.6 years in mean who suffer from depression (Chang et al, 2011). The government’s mental health strategy, No Health without Mental Health (DoH, 2011), also recognised the need for mental health awareness to be raised in primary care and acute hospital settings.

Traditionally, mental health and physical health care have both been delivered and commissioned via separate entities. However, the vision of mental health liaison (MHL) was developed as an intervention to lead on and address this, aimed at significantly reducing the incidence of mental illness associated with physical illness and vice versa, thereby reducing the burden in particular upon secondary care services.

JMB Health Consultancy have been commissioned by 3 separate organisations to undertake reviews of liaison services including 4 acute Trusts and incorporating 2 large mental health providers within the North with similar findings and recommendations for the direction of travel for the future of liaison including:
